Is Amazon Assistant a virus? Technically, it’s not. Amazon Assistant is a legitimate browser extension designed to improve the shopping experience by providing the best offers from Amazon.

It looks like a useful tool called to make online shopping better. Even so, the app has a bunch of negative reviews from unsatisfied users who blame it on having a malicious behavior.

Amazon Assistant virus negatively affects browser performance and is categorized as PUA and browser hijacker. Once installed, this extension modifies browser settings and starts pushing intrusive pop-up ads. Although the term “virus” is not correct to describe this kind of threat, it’s widely used due to the suspicious data-tracking activity performed by the tool.

How did the Amazon Assistant virus get on my Mac?

The app can be freely downloaded directly from Amazon’s official website, Google Play Store, Chrome Web Store, or Mozilla Firefox add-on store. But be careful as it can also get on your computer bundled with other freeware.

Bundling is the primary distribution method of PUAs. Unfortunately, some software doesn’t honestly disclose that other apps will also be installed along the way. To avoid getting into this trap, always opt for custom installation.

Primary symptoms of Amazon Assistant virus

As a browser hijacker, the Amazon Assistant virus tends to change the default homepage and search engine without your permission. It turns browsing experience into a nightmare by:

  • Displaying tons of pop-ups and banners, promoting fake updates or suspicious software
  • Offering too many unrelated shopping deals
  • Opening new browser windows unexpectedly
  • Turning random text on web pages into hyperlinks
  • Installing other adware without your agreement

Amazon Assistant pop-up virus might also be the reason for decreased computer performance or sudden browser freeze.

Potential risks of Amazon Assistant virus

Despite its name, the Amazon Assistant virus is not so harmful as it seems. Still, using this tool might be potentially dangerous to your privacy and data security.

Once getting on a browser, the extension starts tracking your data related to non-personally identifiable information and browsing history: visited websites, clicked links, search queries, etc. Although gathered data is used for advertising purposes only, there is also a chance of transferring it to ad networks and other third parties.

As a browser hijacker, the Amazon Assistant virus can redirect you to affiliate pages. It’s not only annoying but unsafe, as you’re running a risk of landing on an infected website and facing severe malware there.

Get a free version of CleanMyMac X from the developer’s site
In the app, click Optimization > Launch Agents

Note that to uninstall the Amazon Assistant virus, you should get rid of every component associated with this tool. Manual removal won’t always be effective, as there are still may be hidden files left on your device. To find them and remove the PUA once and for all, scan your computer with a reliable anti-malware tool.

As for me, CleanMyMac X is the best option, as it’s notarized by Apple. To be sure that my Mac is protected, I regularly use its Malware Removal module. Here is how it works:

  1. Download and install CleanMyMac X (at no cost at all).
  2. Launch it and select Malware Removal on the left-side panel.
  3. Press Scan.
  4. If the software finds anything malicious on your computer, it will let you know. If it does, press Remove.

Step 2. Remove Amazon Assistant virus from all your browsers

Safari

  1. Launch Safari and go to the Safari menu > Preferences at the top of the screen.
  2. Choose the Extension tab and look for the suspicious extension.
  3. Once you find it, click on it and press Uninstall.

Google Chrome

  1. Launch Chrome and paste ‘chrome://extensions’ to the address bar.
  2. You can also open the list of your Chrome extensions by going to the Chrome menu. Choose Preferences and then select the Extensions tab on the sidebar.

  3. Scroll the list to find the malicious extension.
  4. If you see one, press Remove next to it.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Launch Firefox and click the menu button (three horizontal lines on the right side of the address bar).
  2. Select Add-ons > Extensions.
  3. Look for Amazon Assistant at the Manage Your Extensions section.
  4. Choose it, then click on the three-dot menu and press Remove.

If removing the Amazon Assistant virus from your browsers seems like a lot of work, I recommend using the CleanMyMac X to do all these steps instead of you. With the Extensions module, you can remove any extension safely, along with all related components. Here is how I remove extensions using CleanMyMac X:

  1. Launch the program and choose Extensions in the sidebar.
  2. Select the browser in the left-side panel.
  3. Pick the checkbox next to the required extension.
  4. Press Remove. Nothing more!

Regular malware checks will also help you keep your computer safe. To protect my Mac automatically, I opt for a real-time malware monitor from CleanMyMac X. It’s called to eliminate all kinds of threats by running regular scans on the background.

I had previously installed Amazon Workspaces in March 2014 and then stopped using it and also deleted my Workspace on Amazon's servers. Now I'm setting up Amazon Workspaces again with a client on the same Mac, running Yosemite. The client was still installed and it updated itself to v1.0.8. However, now it keeps cycling through a series of login attempt windows without ever asking me for my login credentials. I know I have a good network connection, and I have no firewall or http proxy in my way. I tried reinstalling by downloading the client installation package from the clients web page, and I also tried deleting the directory for Workspaces under ~/Library/Application Support/ and deleting the preferences files ~/Library/Preferences/com.amazon*
I assume the issue is that my old credentials are still somehow retained by the Workspaces client and I need to clear them out.
I attached screenshots for reference. Note that 'Register' and 'Advanced Settings' are not accessible in the menu -- both are greyed out.

Hello, sorry about your issue.
It is possible that your registration code that you used is no longer valid. Can you send me your registration code via private message to that I can validate.
Also to change your registration code to a new one on Mac, in the top menu click options, then Register, then type in your new registration code.
Please let us know if this solves your problem.
Thanks!

I have the same/similar problem.
What I did was to remove the old VPC and Workspace Directory and then I started getting these issues. Workspaces was automatically updated to 1.08 as well and it keeps looping on the 'registration service' which it cannot connect to. By it looping on this i cannot access the menu to change the registration code.
One of my coworkers tried the same thing and it works fine for him. He didn't have Workspaces installed previously which I did.
Knowing that the old workspace directory is gone, is there a way I can find this setting/file and delete it manually?
I'm on the same OS as the original thread user.

I have exactly the same issue. Has anyone figured out how to reinstall Mac OS client so that it doesn't throw 'Registration Service' error?

Hi,
Apologies for the issue you have been facing. If I understand it clearly then this issue surfaces after your WorkSpace directory got deleted. In this situation what you see in is actually a desired behavior. This is our client health check dashboard and in this case it tells that WorkSpace resource corresponding to the given registration code does not exist.
Now in situation you have two options to change your registration code.
Option 1
1) Launch the client
2) After few seconds you will see dialog with an error message and a retry button (refer the RetryDialog.png attchement).
3) At this instance click on the setting->Register link
4) Change the registration code
Option 2
1) Close WorkSpaces client
2) If on Windows then navigate to 'C:Users<user>Application DataLocalAmazon Web Services' and delete all inside the folder. If on OS X then navigate to '/Users/<user>/Library/Logs/Amazon Web Services' and delete all under the folder
3) Launch WorkSpaces client and you should be able to provide new registration code
Please let us know if it solves the issue that you have been facing. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Delete the file here:
/Users/<user>/Library/Application Support/Amazon Web Services/Amazon
Looks like it contains the info from the last install and is not overwritten with the new install!

You dont have to uninstall anything. On a MAC when the workspaces client is open look at the top bar for Options. Then there should be a field for 'manage registrations'.
Make sure the code matches your actual registration. If it doesnt then you need to correct by deleting the old an re-entering the correct code. The code will throw a network error if its incorrect.
